DHL Freight has deployed Daimler Trucks' two Fuso eCanter electric trucks as part of its efforts to reduce overland transport emissions.
The trucks have been deployed in the Berlin metropolitan area under 24-month test phase.
The 7.5-ton eCanter electric trucks, which will start at the Wustermark branch, will be used for local freight forwarding services in Berlin.
Daimler’s electric tucks will deliver less-than-container-load shipments weighing over 35 kg to the businesses and private customers in the city center.
They will be used for pick-up and delivery of products such as electric or large home appliances, helping to reduce pollution for first and last mile services in the road transport business.
DHL Parcel has also purchased four other electric trucks for the Berlin region, in addition to two vehicles for DHL Freight.
The company will use the four trucks to serve customers and companies in the central downtown area of Berlin.
With a commercial payload of 3.5 tons, the Fuso eCanter vehicle has a range of about 100km.
DHL is planning to increase the carbon efficiency of its own activities and transport subcontractors by 50% by 2025, while planning to reduce net logistics-related emissions to zero by the year 2050.
DHL Freight CEO Uwe Brinks said: “The use of alternative drives, such as those built into the all-electric FUSO eCanter, plays an important role in reaching our Group-wide goal of reducing all logistics-related emissions to zero by the year 2050.
“DHL Freight is firmly committed to helping make this happen. By deploying the eCanter, we hope to reduce emissions from our forwarding business, as well as local air pollution emissions, which will in turn reduce our carbon footprint and that of our customers.”
