John Lewis sales down 2.1% last week

Electrical and home technology sales rose by 4.3% as products in the communications technology category climbed by 4.8%. Trade in the category was mainly driven by sales of mobile phones, which were up 43% year-on-year. There was also an increased demand for tablets. Sales of electricals were up 4% thanks to very strong sales of fans due to the hot weather.

Fashion sales were down 2.9% in the week although sales in the beauty, wellbeing and leisure category were up 3.9%. Sales of women’s accessories edged up 0.4% as the retailer price matched competitor promotions through its Never Knowingly Undersold policy.

Meanwhile, home sales fell by 7.3% overall despite cookshop sales being up 39% as customers bought products for outdoor dining. Other strong performers included outdoor furniture and low tog duvets where sales rose by 32.2% and 33% respectively.
