A proven roadmap for Industry 4.0 and Connected Manufacturing is beginning to emerge, says Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE).

A theme is emerging among manufacturing leaders when it comes to digitising while maintaining multiple generations and lifecycles of technology, according to enterprise technology company Hewlett Packard Enterprises (HPE).

“Manufacturers have lots of experience and skill in managing technologies across different generations, legacy, state of the art, and are now adding the next element, digital technology”, says Martin Rainer, VP and GM of manufacturing industry for Hewlett Packard Enterprises.

Embracing and integrating multiple sources of data, such as machine to machine and sensor data, and making it available in real time in order to improve processes is the real power of data.

Connected Manufacturing success factors identified“Based on our learning, we have figured out some key success factors have developed a standard method or recipe to initiate and gain traction with the digital agenda”, Martin explains.

  • Understand the baseline and digital maturity of your organisation and measure these against business metrics. The end challenge is to not to get digital technology to work, but seamlessly and securely integrate it in order to enhance and streamline the business.
  • Build a holistic roadmap that is not about technology and IT but business strategy. Align it with a 5 year + business plan that is broad and comprehensive.
  • Find a pilot that lets you to start small and simple and put quick results on the table. A compelling and convincing proof of concept will encourage the board to keep investing, and even create a self-funding cycle.
  • No one single function can solely own and run digital agenda. There has to be integration across all critical functions and sound stakeholder management supported by strong sponsorship at the board.
